Experience a fun, interactive one-hour presentation by a kid with dyslexia for kids with dyslexia, their classmates, parents, teachers, and anyone else who wants to learn what it's like to have dyslexia, dysgraphia, or related learning differences.
"Dyslexia from the Inside Out" was developed by Avery Poirier at the age of 8 as a way of explaining to non-dyslexic classmates, teachers, and administrators—“once and for all”—the reasons behind her use of technology, tutoring and curriculum accommodations. Avery explains: “Most of all, I wanted them to understand that I’m not dumb. I just have an artist’s brain!”
Now 16, Avery has presented this lively educational program—in settings ranging from classrooms to conventions—to hundreds of kids, teachers, parents, school administrators and others who are interested in learning more about what it's like to have dyslexia.
In combination with her approachable style, Avery's unique position as both peer and mentor gives her a special rapport with young audiences. The interactive presentation offers a memorable and effective way to raise kids' awareness, empathy, and empowerment around dyslexia and other learning differences.
Geared toward audiences aged 8 to adult, the one-hour program covers the basic neuroscience of dyslexia; its prevalence, signs and symptoms; an overview of the psychosocial impact of dyslexia on the kids who have it; examples of prominent individuals with learning differences; and suggested accommodations for the classroom, home, and, most importantly, in our minds.
The presentation ends with simple, entertaining exercises that allow those with non-dyslexic brains to experience the extra work—and emotional strain—that people with dyslexic brains endure to effectively process spoken and written language.
